About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Practitioner to join our Children Looked After (CLA) team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in ensuring that children in care receive the highest quality support, stability, and opportunities to thrive. You will work collaboratively with children, families, foster carers, and partner agencies to deliver positive outcomes and ensure compliance with statutory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality social work support to children looked after, ensuring their needs are met in line with statutory regulations and best practice.
  • Take a leading role in case management, supporting less experienced social workers and contributing to their development through mentoring and guidance.
  • Develop and implement care plans, ensuring the voice of the child is central to all decision-making processes.
  • Conduct risk assessments and intervene effectively in complex cases to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
  • Work closely with multi-agency professionals, including health, education, and legal services, to coordinate support for children in care.
  • Attend court proceedings as necessary, preparing reports and giving evidence when required.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and reflective supervision to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records in line with local authority policies and procedures.
  • Essential Criteria

  • Degree in Social Work (or equivalent) and Social Work England registration.
  • Significant post-qualification experience in children's social care, specifically within a Children Looked After team or similar setting.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, and an understanding of safeguarding and corporate parenting responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to manage complex cases and make sound professional judgments.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Excellent assessment, communication, and report-writing skills.
  • Commitment to promoting the welfare and rights of children in care.
  • Willingness to travel within the local authority area as required.
  • Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in supervising or mentoring junior social workers.
  • Additional qualifications in therapeutic or systemic practice.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and working with children with complex needs.
